Oncewearrivedatourhometown,wewouldbegreetedwithopenarmsbyourrelatives.Wewouldexchangewarmhugsandheartygreetingsbeforesittingdowntoagrandfeast.Thetablewasalwaysfilledwithawidearrayofdishes,eachonemoredeliciousthanthelast.Fromcrispyroastedducktosavorystir-friedvegetables,therewassomethingforeveryone.Wewouldchatandlaughthroughoutthemeal,catchinguponeachother'slives.

OneofthehighlightsofSpringFestivalformeasachildwasreceivingredenvelopesfromourrelatives.Thesewerespecialenvelopesfilledwithmoney,givenasagestureofgoodluckandprosperityforthenewyear.Theexcitementofreceivingtheseenvelopeswaspalpable,andIwouldeagerlycountupmystashattheendoftheday.
NewYear’sEve
OnNewYear'sEve,theentirefamilywouldgathertogethertowatchtheannualtelevisedSpringFestivalGala.Wewouldsitaroundthetelevision,munchingonsnacksandlaughingatthecomedyskitsanddanceperformances.Asmidnightdrewnear,wewouldlightfireworksoutside,watchingastheylituptheskywithbrightcolorsandcracklingsounds.
MakingDumplings
AnothertraditionthatIlovedwasmakingdumplingswithmyfamily.Wewouldallgatheraroundthekitchentable,eachofuswithabowloffillinginfrontofus.Wewouldthenwrapthefillingincirclesofdough,carefullycrimpingtheedgestocreatetheperfectdumplingshape.Itwasafunandinteractiveactivitythatbroughtusallclosertogether.
VisitingTemples
Onthefirstdayofthenewyear,wewouldvisitthelocaltempletoofferprayersforgoodluckandprosperity.Thetemplewouldbefilledwithpeopleburningincenseandmakingofferingstothegods.Thesmellofincensefilledtheair,creatingapeacefulandspiritualambiance.
PlayingGames
DuringSpringFestival,wewouldalsospendalotoftimeplayinggameswithourrelatives.Whetheritwasmahjong,cardgames,orboardgames,therewasalwayssomethingfuntodo.Wewouldoftenplaywellintothenight,laughingandjokingaswecompetedagainsteachother.
TheLionDance
OneofthemostexcitingthingstowatchduringSpringFestivalwastheliondance.Atroupeofperformerswoulddressupinelaboratelioncostumesanddancetothebeatofdrumsandcymbals.Theywouldperformacrobaticfeatsandinteractwiththeaudience,creatinganelectrifyingatmosphere.
ATasteofTradition
OneofmyfavoriteSpringFestivalfoodswastangyuan,orsweetglutinousriceballs.Theseweresmall,roundballsfilledwithsweetsesamepasteorredbeanpaste,servedinahotandfragrantbroth.Eatingtheseonacoldwinter'sdayalwaysfilledmewithasenseofcomfortandnostalgia.

Onthefifteenthdayofthenewyear,wewouldcelebratetheLanternFestival.Wewouldlightcolorfullanternsandreleasethemintothesky,watchingastheyfloatedupintothedarkness.Itwasamagicalsight,andonethatIalwayslookedforwardto.

Asachild,IlovedcatchingfirefliesduringSpringFestival.Wewouldventureoutintothefieldsatnight,armedwithjarsandnets.Thefieldswouldbefilledwiththesoftglowoffireflies,andwewouldspendhourschasingafterthem,laughingandshoutingaswecaughtthem.
ASenseofCommunity
